Barrister in the Community

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we are asked to remember what we are grateful for. And this Thanksgiving we at Barrister Executive Suites, Inc. are grateful for the members of our community that give back through volunteer work or whatever means possible. This year, we would like to mention Joyce Wong, an employee at Barrister Executive Suites, Inc., who is an active volunteer with many organizations including Be the Match Registry.
Be the Match Registry is the new name of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). There are numerous ways to help including signing up to be a bone marrow donor. Information can be found at:
http://marrow.org/Giving/Ways_to_Give.aspx
Joyce Wong volunteered at CareNow LA at the LA Sports Arena from October 20 through October 23, 2011 to encourage people to sign up to be a bone marrow donor for Be the Match Registry. Even with millions of individuals registered, many patients are unable to find a match.
Thank you, Joyce, for calling to mind such a great cause and for the volunteer work that you continue to do.

Veterans Day 2011

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Barrister Executive Suites, Inc. would like remember those who have lost their lives in battle for our country and to honor living veterans.
Veteran’s Day originated during World War I when an armistice was reached between the Allied nations and Germany. It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. One year later, on November 11th, the day was declared Armistice Day to honor those who have died in service to the country. In 1954 President Eisenhower turned Armistice Day into Veterans Day to honor all who have served past, present, and future.
Although Veterans Day falls once a year, we are always grateful for the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces to protect our country.

3-Day for the Cure

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Walking 60 miles is no easy feat. So then why do thousands of men and women in San Diego volunteer to walk? To help mothers, sisters, spouses, and friends get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, there is no cure, and 1.3 million people are diagnosed annually.*
As participant Deborah Davidson puts it, “walking 60 miles is easy compared to anyone going through treatment.” And that is exactly what motivates Davidson, Barrister Executive Suites, Inc. Sales and Leasing Manager to walk again over November 18, 2011 to November 20, 2011 with Team Generations. She is the mother of two girls and hopes their generation will no longer see any deaths from breast cancer, see better treatment and continue progress on battling this disease that affects woman of all ages. Davidson will be walking for her mother, a two time survivor of breast cancer, and for her friends who have lost a loved one or someone to breast cancer.
The 2011-2012 Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure will spread across 17 different cities in the United States raising money and awareness. Since 1995, events like the 3-Day and Race for the Cure in San Diego have raised $8.5 million dollars to local organizations that have made valuable contributions to breast cancer diagnostics, treatment, education, screening and patient support. The organization has invested more than $1.9 billion to fulfill its promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Happy Halloween!

Friday, October 21st, 2011

As the second largest commercial holiday, second to Christmas, everyone knows about the spooky holiday that comes every year on October 31st.  But most don’t know Halloween’s origins and various interpretations on the myths and superstitions.

Modern day Halloween is a night of pranks, dressing up as super heroes, and trick-or-treating.  But these traditions are far off from the original holiday tracing traditions back to the 8th century.  Halloween is continuing to evolve, although the basic traditions are traced back to two different celebrations.  First, the Catholic’s All Saint’s Day, later known as All Souls Day, which honors the dead and the Celtic Festival of Samhain which were both held on October 31st.  Samhain was a feast to mark the beginning of winter and it was believed that ghosts would return to earth to damage the crops.

As it became popular in America it was more of a secular but community-centered holiday with parties, parades and town-wide parties.  Today, Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday.  A large part of this money comes from candy for trick-or-treating, costumes, and Halloween parties.  It was believed that on Halloween, ghosts come back to earth and to keep ghosts away, people put bowls of candy in front of their doors to prevent them from entering.  And in order to walk amongst the ghosts, people would wear masks.

And there are a few traditions that focused on the future, not the past.  A common game at Halloween parties still to this day is to bob for apples.  But did you know that the first successful “apple-bobber” at a party would be the first to walk down the aisle next?

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and different organizations are doing their part to raise awareness and encourage education among both women and men. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, aside from skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States each year. Approximately 1,910 new cases are expected in men. The ACS also reports that there were an estimated 40,610 breast cancer deaths in 2009 (40,170 women, 440 men). *
In order to better educate women and men on prevention, detection, and diagnosis, St. John’s Hospital and the American Cancer Association is hosting a free two day lecture made possible through a grant from The Harold McAlister Charitable Foundation. The Second Annual Pink Ribbon Lecture will be held at the Santa Monica Public Library Auditorium on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 and Thursday, October 20, 2011.
Jacqui White, Assistant Vice President and St. John’s Hospital Volunteer will be assisting in the organization of this week’s event. “By staying informed, we can save a life. I am looking forward to listening to the different doctors on the panel who will discuss everything from prevention to surgery,” says Jacqui.
Advanced reservations are required. Call 310-829-8453

Tenant in the Spotlight: Johnathan Razbannia

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

We are excited to announce that one of our Encino tenants, Johnathan Razbannia, President of JMR Holdings, will be on radio station 670AM on October 17, 2011 to share insightful information regarding property tax reassessments. JMR Holdings provides an array of services that compliment developers needs, such as assistance with obtaining entitlements for subdivision of land, as well as providing reassessment services for properties that have been incorrectly assessed resulting in higher property tax payments.
Reassessments are accomplished through the evaluation of property taxes for the fiscal year to verify if there would be any merit for a reassessment of the property taxes. This applies to a single-family residence, multi-family residence, commercial, and vacant land parcels purchased in 2002 to the Present. In some instances, JMR Holdings has been able to date back as far as four years in obtaining refunds on tax bills. In fact, JMR Holdings recently had a successful outcome in which the assessment of a new construction project totaling 9.2 million was reduced to 7.5 million, resulting in a total savings of $50,000.
The Property tax reassessment deadline for 2011 is November 30th, so if you would like to inquire about how to possibly reduce your taxes please contact the office of JMR Holdings for a free consultation at (818) 201-0441 or contact him via email at jrazbannia@jmrlanduse.com. Visit his firm on the web at www.jmrlanduse.com.

Please remember to tune in to radio station 670AM on Monday, October 17th from 1:30-2:00PM for some timely information relating to property tax reassessment and a potential tax savings opportunity!
